We all know we’re supposed to get 7-9 hours of sleep a night… that’s right, I said it, even up to 9 hours of sleep! But, most people tend to average 6-7 hours of sleep. We all know it can help us feel better, but did you know it also improves your appearance and helps you shed unwanted weight?
In the 1940’s, the majority of the country slept on average 9 hours a night; way up from the 6.5 hour average now. A lot of this is due to technology in the home (television, computers, mobile phones). Let’s face it, after the sun went down in the 1940’s, there really wasn’t a whole lot to do. Now that our society is shifting to a 24 hour environment, we’re always staying up.As you can see above there are many effects long term sleep deprivation on both our health and appearance. The other reason it’s so important? Sleep deprivation is the number one risk factor for a depressive episode and future suicidal ideation. I think getting more Zzz’s is something everyone can get on board with.
What to sleep more but can’t fall asleep? Stay tuned in next week to find how you can get a good night’s sleep.
